QUALITY CASHMERE 101

Three Things to Look for When Shopping for Cashmere

1. Ensure your Cashmere is Sourced Responsibly

How Your Cashmere is
Produced Matters

Traceable cashmere relies on meticulous record keeping and full transparency from start to finish. If you aren't sure how your cashmere was sourced, make sure to ask. NAKEDCASHMERE sources only Traceable cashmere and by doing so is able to ensure three very important things:

Traceable cashmere relies on meticulous record keeping and full transparency from start to finish. If you aren't sure how your cashmere was sourced, make sure to ask. NAKEDCASHMERE sources only Traceable cashmere, and by doing so is able to ensure three very important things:

FAIR TRADE CASHMERE
100% of our herders' harvest is purchased, regardless of potential ups and downs. Herders are paid in advance, without terms, achieving better financial freedom and the ability to ensure regulated working conditions.

SUSTAINABLE CASHMERE
Our herders and factory-workers are educated on sustainability to exemplary standards. Our factories are key members and contributors on drafting the Animal Welfare standard for cashmere.

GRADE A CASHMERE

We produce high-quality Grade A cashmere for all our cashmere products.

100% CRUELTY-FREE CASHMERE

Our free-roaming goats spend their winters grazing on the hills of Inner Mongolia, until molting season, when they follow their herders down for a once-a-year grooming. They are then hand-combed, which involves the gentle brushing of the goat's soft under coat, leaving the top coat in-tact, to protect them from wind, weather and sunburn.

2. Ply, Gauge and Weight - Why It All Matters

Cashmere is a Commodity Yarn,
Valued by Weight

Ply and gauge are terms used to describe the way the sweater is structured, not the quality or value. The weight of the cashmere directly determines the value of a sweater. The more cashmere used to make a garment, the higher the value. Always ensure the cashmere sweater you buy is made with quality cashmere. The longer and thinner the fibers, the more soft and longer lasting the cashmere.

What is Gauge?
Gauge is the number of needles used per inch.

The lower the gauge, the more loosely knit the sweater is.
The higher the gauge, the more tightly knit the sweater is.

What is Ply?
Ply is the number of individual strands twisted together to form a yarn.

The twisting process to form yarn is much like braiding hair. 2-ply yarn consists of two strands twisted in opposite directions and then twisted together to create resistance. Using 2-ply yarn leaves you with a sweater that will hang straight and luxuriously. A sweater created with a single ply has motion only in one direction, which unless designed exquisitely, will lead to warping of the garment.

3. If the Price Seems Too Good to Be True, Double Check the Fabric Content

Pure Cashmere vs. Cashmere Blends

Cashmere in its purest form is the most sought-after fiber and the most sumptuous insulator, keeping you both warm in the winter and cool in the spring. It becomes softer with age and travels gracefully.

Quality cashmere should last a lifetime.
Cashmere Blends will combine cashmere with less expensive yarns such as silk, wool and synthetic fibers. This compromises the coveted softness and insulating properties of cashmere and lowers the value of the garment. As a result, the garment is often offered at lower prices.
